After the destruction of Sauron and the One Ring, the Phial was one of the items found on Sam when he and Frodo were rescued by the Eagles Gandalf kept both it and Sam's box of Earth safe while the two hobbits were being healed, after their collapse on the side of Mount Doom. Toward the end of their quest, Sam attempted to use the Phial's light in the Crack of Doom, but it was subdued by the power of the heart of Sauron's realm.
